Renew, Reflect, & Recommit
Summer is a great time to take stock of your career. Because teaching can be a stressful, fast-paced profession, it is important to slow down and take time to renew, reflect, and recommit.
Renew
Renewal is the process of connecting to purpose.
Renewal is important because it can help you re-ignite your passion for teaching and leading. On the other hand, if you aren't mindful of the importance of renewal, you are at risk of burnout, negativity, and apathy. Over the years, your passion for teaching can fade without frequent attention to what brought you to teaching in the first place. A good starting point for renewal is to consider the following questions:
Reflect
Reflection is the process of examining experiences.
Chances are you've been reflecting on your teaching experiences ever since you enrolled in a teacher education program. You've learned that reflection can lead to improved instructional practice. But let's expand what is meant by teachers' professional practice by including leading.
Reflecting on your leadership practice can be a matter of articulating your leadership stories. Speaking your truth is a way to improve practice because it allows you to question your actions, explore alternatives, challenge your assumptions, and clarify your ideas. To begin the process of reflecting on your leadership practice, consider the following story stems:
-
The first time I felt like a teacher leader was when.....
-
I'm most/least successful as a teacher leader when....
-
The best/worst part of being a teacher leader is.....
Time spent to renew and reflect can lead to a recommitment to teaching and leading.
Recommit
Recommitment is the process of dedicating to purpose.
Recommitment comes from knowing that what you do makes a difference. When you dedicate yourself to what's important you are ready to make a significant contribution to schools, to children, and to the community.
Take time this summer to rekindle your passion for teaching and leading. Renewal, reflection, and recommitment are growth processes that will ensure improved professional practice.
